How to Choose Your Frame

An Artist’s Perspective

The Philosophy of the Frame: Choosing a frame is a deeply personal decision. A frame does more than just hold a piece of art; it must match the mood of the image, the aesthetics of your room, and your own individual style. While the right frame can beautifully enhance a photograph, it can also distract from it. In many ways, frames create strict visual boundaries, forcing an artwork into a predefined interpretational framework.

My Personal Preference: Personally, I prefer my artwork to breathe. Very few of the pieces in my own home are framed, especially the larger-format works. I find that a frameless presentation allows the image to flow boundlessly, to interact naturally with the space.

Finding Your Perfect Match: However, I completely understand that many collectors love the grounded, finished, and disciplined look that a well-chosen frame provides. Because finding the perfect match is so specific to your home's unique interior, I highly encourage working with a local custom framer. A professional can help you explore different materials and styles to find the exact right fit for your space.

(Note: Custom frames can be successfully fitted by a professional to both our archival canvas and our metal prints.)
